Across Centuries to Fez

Your Moroccan journey begins at Tangier, where your guide welcomes you on arrival from Spain. Almost immediately, the road begins to reveal why Morocco cannot be understood through a single period of history. Today we travel through nearly two thousand years before reaching Fez.

Our first important stop is Volubilis, once a flourishing Roman city on the southwestern edge of the Roman world. Walk along its ancient streets among the remains of houses, mosaics, olive presses, public buildings and triumphal architecture, while considering something often forgotten: Morocco was never isolated from the Mediterranean. People, commodities and ideas have been crossing these landscapes since antiquity.

Only a short distance away, the Roman world gives way to another chapter at Moulay Idriss Zerhoun, the hill town associated with Moulay Idriss I and the beginnings of the Idrisid state in Morocco. The town remains an important place of pilgrimage and spiritual memory. Continue to Meknes, transformed into an imperial capital during the reign of Moulay Ismail in the seventeenth century. Its monumental gates, granaries, walls and palatial remains tell a very different story of power from the ruins we encountered earlier in the day. By late afternoon we reach Fez.

Before entering its medina tomorrow, we begin from outside its walls. Ramparts, gates and fortified borjs introduce the geography of the old city and help us understand how Fez grew and protected itself over the centuries. Tonight, rest. Tomorrow we enter the city itself.

Inside the Living Medina

Fez is not a museum preserved behind glass. It is a living city that still works through many of the relationships that shaped it: neighbourhood and mosque, market and workshop, fountain and house, craftsman and apprentice, sacred space and everyday life. We begin near the Royal Palace and the historic Mellah, where the story of Morocco's Jewish communities forms an inseparable part of the city's history. From the heights above Fez, we then look across the immense medina before descending toward Bab Guissa and entering on foot.

From here, Fez must be discovered at human speed.

The streets gradually introduce us to the guilds and crafts that have sustained the city for generations: metalworkers, carpenters, leather workers, dyers, food merchants, bookbinders and artisans whose workshops remain woven into the neighbourhoods around them. As we descend deeper into the medina, we pass through markets and squares such as Attarine, Souk el-Henna, Nejjarine and Seffarine, reaching the religious and intellectual heart of the city around the Qarawiyyin, the shrine of Moulay Idriss II and the historic madrasas.

But monuments alone cannot explain Fez.

Its real character appears between them—in the sound of a hammer in Seffarine Square, bread disappearing into a neighbourhood oven, a mule carrying goods through a lane too narrow for a vehicle, the smell of cedar and spices, or a craftsman practising something learned from the hands of another craftsman before him.

During the day there will be time for lunch and further exploration of the medina. We conclude with something simpler and perhaps more revealing than another monument: traditional mint tea in a Fez home. For a little while, we stop being spectators and become guests.

Across the Mountains

Today geography becomes our guide.

Leaving Fez, we climb gradually toward the Middle Atlas, passing through Imouzzer and Ifrane before reaching the cedar landscapes around Azrou. The change can be surprising: fertile plains give way to forests, mountain towns, grazing lands and high plateaus. Around Azrou we enter the cedar country, habitat of the Barbary macaque, and learn how the forests and seasonal pastures have shaped life in this part of Morocco.

This is also a landscape of Amazigh communities, farmers, shepherds and pastoral movement. Depending upon season and circumstance, we may encounter weekly markets, villages, shepherds or families moving with their animals. Such encounters are never staged; they belong to the road itself.

Continuing south through the Middle Atlas toward Khenifra, the landscape changes again as we approach the great mountain systems separating northern Morocco from the plains of Marrakech.

This long overland journey is not simply transportation between Fez and Marrakech. It allows us to watch Morocco change before our eyes—in vegetation, architecture, agriculture, language, climate and ways of life.

By evening, the mountains release us onto the plains of Marrakech, the Red City, with the High Atlas rising beyond it.

The Red City and the Art of Water

Marrakech was born in a landscape where water could never be taken for granted. To understand the city, therefore, we begin not simply with monuments but with one of the forces that made urban life here possible: the management of water. At the Menara, gardens, orchards and reservoir introduce us to the relationship between irrigation, agriculture and the growth of Marrakech.

From there we explore the monumental heritage of the city, including the Koutoubia, whose architectural language travelled across the western Islamic world and finds a celebrated relative across the Strait in Seville's Giralda.

The city's dynasties left different layers behind them. The Saadian Tombs reveal one of the most refined surviving expressions of Saadian craftsmanship, while gardens and palaces reveal how architecture, water, shade and vegetation were brought together to make life possible—and beautiful—in this environment.

But Marrakech ultimately belongs to its people.

As the afternoon moves toward evening, the city gathers around Djemaa el-Fna. Food sellers, musicians, storytellers and crowds transform the square into something that cannot adequately be described as a monument.

It is not merely a place to see.

It is a place that happens.

From Imperial Memory to the Modern Capital

Travel north from Marrakech to Rabat, Morocco's contemporary capital and a city where different periods of Moroccan history coexist unusually close to one another.

Rabat and neighbouring Salé face each other across the Bouregreg River, sharing geography while carrying distinct histories. Ancient settlement, medieval fortification, Andalusian migration, royal Morocco and the modern capital have all left their marks here. We explore the old medina and its traditional markets before entering the Kasbah of the Oudayas, dramatically positioned above the river and Atlantic approaches.

From its narrow lanes and Andalusian garden, we continue toward the monumental ensemble of the Hassan Tower and Mausoleum of Mohammed V, where an unfinished twelfth-century mosque stands beside one of the most important royal monuments of modern Morocco. The day also introduces Rabat's deeper archaeological layers at Chellah, where Roman and later Islamic histories occupy the same landscape.

Rabat does not belong to a single century. That is precisely its fascination.

The Rif and the Return to the Strait

Our final day turns north toward the Rif Mountains and Chefchaouen.

Set against the mountains, Chefchaouen developed its distinctive character through the histories of northern Morocco and Andalusia. Its compact medina, whitewashed houses, blue passages and mountain setting make it immediately beautiful, but we take time to look beyond the colour and understand the community that created the town.

After lunch and a guided walk through the medina, we continue toward Tangier.

Eventually the Strait appears again.

Six days earlier, you crossed it to enter Morocco. You return to it having travelled through Roman cities and sacred towns, imperial capitals and medinas, cedar forests and mountain landscapes, workshops, gardens and family traditions. The ferry may take you back to Spain.

But perhaps you will not cross the Strait quite the same way you crossed it before.
